Pinoys’ ‘Fun Day’ draws huge crowd

DUBAI – Filipino volunteers have once again concluded another fun day for their countrymen, giving them more reasons to live happily while working or studying at the same time.

Kabayan Fun Day, solely for and by Filipinos in the UAE, happened on Saturday, November 4, as part of the ongoing 36th Sharjah International Book Fair 2017.

Some 2,000 guests and individuals from different sectors have come over to celebrate the second Kabayan Fun Day at the Expo Center Sharjah.

Organized by Filipino Volunteers in the UAE and supported by Sharjah Book Authority (SBA), the Fun Day held multiple activities, such as On-the-Spot Painting Competition, Science Technology Competition, Speech Choir Competition, and Battle of the Champions.

To participate in the event, a group of Filipino medical practitioners have conducted a medical mission for the participants and guests. There was also a face-painting corner for kids and kids-at-heart.

Two UAE-based schools have joined, namely, The Philippines School Muhaisnah, Dubai and Al Alfiah Filipino Private School, Sharjah.

This year, the organizers have incorporated new means. On the On-the-Spot Painting contest, instead of drawing on canvass, the students drew on white plane shirts.

Last year, the students who joined the Science Technology Competition just flaunt their original inventions. This edition, they have successfully created battery-oriented robots for 120 minutes from recyclable materials.

Meanwhile, student and other non-student Filipinos have belted different songs to win at the Battle of the Champions.

Consul General Paul Raymund Cortes and his wife, Yasmin, graced the significant event. Other officials of SBA were also there during the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

“Kabayan Fun Day is not just about celebrating this day, it’s also a way to share the talent of every OFW here in the emirate, most especially the students, our future,” Dante Delizo, one of the event coordinators, said.

According to him, the goal of the Filipino volunteers and SBA was met during the almost four-hour event.

“It was very fulfilling on our part, we worked hand-in-hand. We planned this for almost three months,” Delizo said.
